What Is a HEIC File (and Why Does Your iPhone Use It)?
HEIC is the format your iPhone saves photos in. Here's what it actually is, why Apple switched to it, and what to do when something refuses to open one.

HEIC → JPG / PNG — free, runs in your browser Open →You copied photos off your iPhone, and instead of the familiar .jpg files you were expecting, everything ended in .heic. Your photo editor won’t open them. The upload form on your bank’s website rejects them. Windows shows grey rectangles where the thumbnails should be.
Nothing is broken. Your phone is simply saving pictures in a newer format than most of the software around it can read.
The short answer
HEIC stands for High Efficiency Image Container. It’s a file format Apple adopted as the default for iPhone photos starting with iOS 11 in 2017, and it has been the default on every iPhone since.
The important property is efficiency: a HEIC photo takes up roughly half the space of an equivalent JPEG at comparable visual quality. On a phone holding fifteen thousand photos, halving the storage is a very big deal. That’s the entire reason Apple made the switch.
What’s actually inside the file
It helps to separate two things that often get muddled.
HEIF is the container — the box. It’s an ISO standard (ISO/IEC 23008-12) that describes how to bundle images, thumbnails, metadata, depth maps and even short image sequences into one file.
HEVC, also known as H.265, is the codec — the compression method that squeezes the actual pixels down. It’s the same family of compression used for 4K video.
A .heic file is normally a HEIF container holding HEVC-compressed image data. This is why HEIC compresses so much better than JPEG: JPEG’s compression dates from 1992, while HEVC benefits from three decades of additional research into how to throw away image data people won’t notice.
The container also explains some HEIC oddities. Because HEIF can hold multiple images in one file, a single .heic can contain a burst sequence, a Live Photo’s still frame alongside its motion data, or an image made of tiled sub-images. That’s why some converters occasionally grab the wrong frame or fail outright on unusual files — they’re not prepared for a “photo” that’s actually a small collection.
Why so much software still can’t read it
Format adoption is slow, and HEVC is patent-encumbered. Decoding it involves licensing considerations that are simple for Apple — which ships the decoder in its own hardware — and awkward for everyone else.
The practical result in 2026:
- macOS reads HEIC natively and has since High Sierra.
- iOS and iPadOS obviously handle it fine.
- Windows 10 and 11 need the HEIF Image Extensions from the Microsoft Store, and full support historically also required the HEVC Video Extensions, which Microsoft charges a nominal fee for. Some PCs from manufacturers who’ve licensed it get this preinstalled; many don’t.
- Android support has improved considerably but varies by manufacturer and app.
- Web browsers largely do not display HEIC directly. This is why upload forms reject it.
- Older desktop software — legacy versions of Photoshop, print shop systems, government portals, and a great deal of enterprise software — simply doesn’t know the format exists.
So the file isn’t corrupt. It’s just newer than the software you’re pointing at it.
Your three options
Stop your iPhone creating them. Open Settings → Camera → Formats and choose Most Compatible. Your phone will save new photos as JPEG instead. The trade-off is real: your photos will take roughly twice the storage, and you lose some of the format’s advantages like better handling of high-dynamic-range scenes. This also doesn’t help with the thousands of HEIC photos you already have.
Change how photos transfer off the phone. In Settings → Photos, scroll to “Transfer to Mac or PC” and choose Automatic rather than Keep Originals. iOS will convert to JPEG during transfer. Worth knowing: iOS already does this silently in several situations — when you attach a photo to an email, share it to most apps, or upload it through Safari, your phone usually hands over a JPEG rather than the original HEIC.
Convert the files you have. For photos already sitting on a drive, or files someone else sent you, conversion is the only real answer.
Converting without handing your photos to a stranger
Most free converters work by uploading your file to a company’s server, converting it there, and sending the result back. It works — but it means your photos briefly live on someone else’s machine. For holiday snaps that may not matter. For a passport scan, a medical form, or an insurance photo of your home, it’s a poor trade for a format change.

It also strips GPS coordinates and camera details by default, which matters more than most people realise. Photos straight from a phone typically record exactly where they were taken.
One surprise to expect
Your converted JPGs will usually be larger than the HEIC originals — sometimes twice the size. That’s not a mistake and it isn’t a sign that something went wrong. It’s the direct consequence of everything above: HEIC compresses more efficiently, so the same picture needs more room as a JPEG.

Is HEIC worth keeping?
If your world is entirely Apple, yes — leave the default alone. You get better photos in half the space and everything just works.
If you regularly move photos to Windows machines, share them with people on other platforms, or upload them to systems that were built a decade ago, the compatibility tax may not be worth the storage saving. Switching to Most Compatible costs you disk space and buys you never thinking about this again.
Most people land somewhere in between: keep HEIC on the phone, and convert the handful of photos that need to go somewhere else.
